How to Install a New Faucet Replacing Your Old one

Are you looking for a guide to install your newly purchased faucets? You are in the right place then. You won’t have to call an expert as by following some simple steps you can easily install it.

So let’s take a look at the steps to install the faucet whether it is a kitchen or bathroom faucet.

Before starting the process, you should arrange;

Remove the Old Faucet

You should start by taking out the old faucet from the basin area, and you just need a wrench to accomplish it. You can take help from another family member to smoothly finish the job.

Now, one by one remove the supply lines located underneath and while removing use a bucket to catch the excess water from the lines. To remove the lines, use a wrench to unscrew the threaded nuts. Hold the pipes properly while unscrewing because it can cause damage to the connections located behind the cabinet. While removing the valves, check for any leakage and if you find any, then you will have to turn off the water supply of the whole house.

After disconnecting all the lines, slowly remove the faucet from the top area so that it leave any mark on the panel. Clean the area installation area properly as you will find sealants on the surface.

Install the New Faucet

It is time to install the new faucet, and the process is quite simple. First put the gasket (plastic, fiber or rubber) over the holes located in the sink and cover them using the deck plate. While covering the gasket, use caulking gun or high-quality putty to seal it; otherwise, it can lead to water leakage in the long run. Remove the excess caulk or putty after applying it as it will hinder the look of the new installation. Then connect the faucet with the mounting hardware and tighten it with screws located on the countertop as well as the shank.

Remember: Different kitchen faucet has different mounting hardware so you will have to follow this step accordingly.

Next, pass the lines through the holes in the gasket and line them correctly with respected valves. Then place the nuts along with the washer so that the lines are appropriately connected with the main pipes. Use a wrench and turn it in the clockwise direction to tighten it. You can cover the areas with special cover as it will prevent the connector from dust accumulation.

If you are using a pull-down faucet, then you also need to hook the quick-connect hose to the main water valve. After connecting the hose, you will have to attach the weight because it will facilitate the pull-down action.

Fix the Water Pipe

Now you will have to hook the water supply lines, and you have to cautious while connecting them. Some single handle faucet even comes with hot and cold valves, but you won’t have to worry as it they come in the same spout assembly. The supply lines will come embedded with hot and cold water sign so you will have to hook to the respective water valves. While connecting those valves, it would be better if you can utilize plumber’s tape to seal the joints.

Note: Over tightening the threaded nuts can cause damage to the supply line joint.

Check the Setup

It is time to check whether the setup is complete or not. Switch on the water supply line and investigate whether water is dripping out of any joint. You should also check whether water is flowing correctly through the new faucet.

If you find any slight drip, use the wrench to tighten the connection or else putty or tape to cover the area. However, if you still see the water is dripping out from that particular point, then you might have to unscrew the nut and again put another tape to secure it properly. Make sure the whole setup is leak-free.

Debris and dust accumulation is a common problem in a new faucet and to remove them you just have to flush out the pipe properly. To do that, first, remove any cap or aerator and turn on the water supply line. Allow water to flow for a few minutes as it will help you clear the line. During this time, check whether the faucet is working properly or not and make necessary readjustments.

Lastly, switch off the water and place the cap or aerator at the respective position.
